Abstract
The computerization of the results of bone marrow(BM) study is important not only for the diagnosis and treatment of hematological and related disorders but also for many researches.
We developed newly formed 18 database files with reformed structures and BM diagnostic codes. The results of the 10,155 cases of BM study performed at Seoul National University Hospital for the last 10 years(1983-1992) were reviewed
comprehensively
and
recoded to satisfy the future database management program for the BM study.
The database files have 23 fields and 142 character for each record. Three main codes and four supporting codes were adopted for the BM diagnostic code system. The main codes were made via combination of the past diagnostic results and
textbookwise
reclassifications of the various hematological conditions. On reformation of the BM codes, following concepts were newly introduced: the description of multiple diagnosis (up to three), various descriptive diagnostic terminology such as
'suggestive
of'
or 'rule out,' and subcodes for proper diagnosis and research. Owing to the reformation of the BM diagnostic codes we could reduce the cases with unclear or improper diagnostic codes from 245(2.4%) to 42(0.4%) cases.
The refored BM diagnostic codes and database structures will be useful for construction of the database system for development of the related softwares as well as for proper diagnosis and researches.
